Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools opened the 2026-27 school year on Tuesday, August 25. If the first week already has you flipping between a district PDF and a group chat, this is the one-page version: the dates that shape the family calendar, and the handful of things genuinely different this year.
The dates to put on the fridge
The year runs from Tuesday, August 25, 2026 to Wednesday, June 9, 2027, on what the district calls its traditional calendar, adopted by the Board of Education back in April 2025.
Four early release days, all Wednesdays: October 14, December 9, February 24 and April 28.
The breaks: Thanksgiving lands Thursday and Friday, November 26 and 27, and because Wednesday, November 25 is a teacher workday, students get the full Wednesday-through-Friday stretch. Winter break runs December 21 through January 1. Spring break is March 29 through April 2.
Other days off for students: Labor Day (September 7), teacher workdays on September 21, October 2, November 2 and 3, January 22, February 15 and March 25, Veterans Day (November 11), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 18), Good Friday (March 26) and Memorial Day (May 31).
Grading periods end October 30, January 21, March 24 and June 9.
If it snows: makeup days come in this order: January 18, February 15, March 25, June 10, June 11. The superintendent can waive up to four, and state law lets the district use remote instruction for weather closures.
What is different this year
Nine choice and magnet programs are in their final year. The board voted on August 11 to end the visual and performing arts magnets at Crestdale Middle, Greenway Park Elementary and Long Creek Elementary, the STEM programs at Northeast Middle, Walter G. Byers K-8, Whitewater Middle, Wilson STEM Academy and Harding University High, and Harding's Law and Social Justice program, all after 2026-27. Replacement STEM magnets open at Grove Park Elementary in 2027-28 and Second Ward High in 2028-29.
K-2 students have been told not to use YouTube. The district issued the guidance this month, and as The Charlotte Mercury reported, the school devices themselves can still reach the site.
Screens are getting a hard look. The district renewed its i-Ready diagnostic software for one year only, with conditions that include an August data report and new restrictions on how the vendor collects and uses student data. At the board's August 11 meeting, CMS staff also described a districtwide review of instructional technology, screen time and data privacy.
The superintendent is back. Dr. Crystal Hill returned to the role in August following a temporary leave; the board has said little about the independent review behind it beyond that it identified district operations and oversight issues. Her budget had a rocky spring, too: the board voted to deny adoption of her $2.1 billion proposal in April before unanimously approving an amended version in May.
