This guide was rewritten on October 4, 2026, to cover Union County Public Schools, which serve Firethorne. An earlier version listed Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools dates.

Firethorne, in Marvin, is served by Union County Public Schools, which opened the 2026-27 year on Monday, August 24. The next day off is Monday, October 19, not Friday, October 16 as the calendar the district first posted last November showed. Here is the rest of the year on one page, through the last day of school on Friday, June 4, 2027.

Which schools serve Firethorne

On the district's 2026-27 attendance maps, addresses on Firethorne Club Drive fall in the Marvin Elementary and Marvin Ridge High zones. Assignments go by street address, so check yours, including the middle school, with the "What School Do I Attend?" tool on the district's attendance and boundary maps page. For more on the schools themselves, see our guide to the Union County schools near Firethorne.

Still ahead this fall

Monday, October 19: no school, teacher workday. The calendar UCPS posted after the school board approved it on November 6, 2025 put this workday on Friday, October 16. The version the district posted in late August, and its online calendar, have it on Monday the 19th. If your printout says the 16th, it is the old one.

Tuesday, November 3: no school. It is Election Day, and teachers have a training day. (The district calls these professional development days; for families they work like any other teacher workday.)

Wednesday, November 11: Veterans Day. Schools are closed.

Thanksgiving: Wednesday, November 25 is a teacher workday, and Thursday and Friday, November 26 and 27, are holidays, so students are off Wednesday through Friday.

Winter break: Monday, December 21 through Friday, January 1. Students return Monday, January 4.

After the holidays

Thursday, January 14: the first semester ends. Friday, January 15 is a teacher workday and Monday, January 18 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so students get a four-day weekend.

Monday, February 15: no school, teacher workday.

Tuesday, March 2: no school, a teacher training day.

Spring break: Good Friday, March 26, then Monday, March 29 through Friday, April 2. Students return Monday, April 5.

Friday, April 30: no school, teacher workday.

Monday, May 31: Memorial Day.

Friday, June 4: last day of school.

Grading periods and report cards

Elementary students are graded in nine-week quarters. The first quarter ends Monday, October 26, with report cards on November 2. The second ends January 14, with report cards January 25.

Middle and high school students are graded in six-week periods. The next one ends Wednesday, November 18, with report cards November 30, followed by January 14, with report cards January 25.

Early release and weather days

The UCPS calendar has no early release days this year; it has no category for them, and none appear on the district's online calendar. It counts 175 instructional days, 86 in the first semester and 89 in the second. No makeup dates are set in advance; the calendar says only that additional days may be added at the superintendent's discretion.

Where to check for changes

The district posts the current calendar, and any changes to it, at ucpsnc.org/calendars. Two UCPS schools with their own schedules, the Wolfe School and Union County Early College, post separate calendars on the same page.
